When should your kids visit your ex’s family?

On Behalf of | Jun 28, 2019 | Family Law |

It can be hard to handle going through a divorce when you have children. One of the things you may have to deal with is continued contact with the other side of the family. Even if you and your spouse no longer get along, his or her family is still related to your children and is likely to play a role in their lives.

For some people, continuing to live in contact with the other side of the family is difficult, especially if they are not kind or accepting of them following the divorce. In that case, what can you do?

One idea is to make sure their family time with your children is directly based on your spouse’s time together with them. There’s no reason that you should have to participate in their family events or activities when they don’t get along with you or welcome you. Instead, in your parenting plan, include that you would like all of your ex-spouse’s family to spend time with your children on his visitation time. That way, you won’t have to worry about coming into contact with the other family.

While it’s important for you to look out for your child’s best interests, you also have to look out for yourself. If you’re concerned about your own relationship with your ex-spouse’s family, then this can be a good solution to prevent trouble. You can keep your distance while supporting their relationship with your child at the same time. Your attorney can help you set up the arrangements so that they are legally binding.
