Spousal support could be the right choice for you

On Behalf of | Jan 23, 2020 | Family Law |

One question that a lot of people have when they begin a divorce is, “Should I be seeking alimony?” Alimony, which is also known as spousal support, can be a wonderful way to support yourself if you’re trying to get back into a career after years of staying home. It can be a good support for men or women who are the lesser-earning spouses in marriages that are breaking down.

Alimony isn’t a guarantee, and that’s something that you should know before you head to your attorney. If you want it, then you should ask for it. You may have a specific budget in mind that you need help with, and that support could be what makes up the difference.

Spousal support can be helpful if you have been out of work for a long period of time or if you’re a lesser-earning spouse. It can be helpful if you’re trying to maintain the same standard of living that you had in marriage following divorce, too.

How long can you receive spousal support?

Spousal support is not forever. In the majority of cases, it will only last temporarily, for a few years or until you remarry. In rare cases, like in cases of the elderly divorcing, alimony may be permanent. Many factors go into the decision to award alimony and in determining how much is fair, so this is something to discuss thoroughly with your attorney.

Our website has more information on spousal support and what to expect when you’re divorcing. If you feel that you need additional financial support to move on following your divorce, then you may want to seek spousal support.
