Severe weather strikes New Jersey: Know how to protect yourself

Dangerous weather is always something to consider if you're going out on the road. Strong winds can topple trees and cause damage to homes or even come down on top of vehicles.

Recent severe weather left several areas in New Jersey without power on Nov. 1, and at least one person was hurt by a falling tree. The weather turned foul, and there were tornado warnings and significant damage from the winds.

Though the storm itself can't be held liable for what happens, people who go out in the weather and contribute to accidents can. For example, a driver who is distracted by the high winds might look away from the road and cross the centerline. A driver who is unfamiliar with driving in rain may not brake soon enough and slide into the tail end of another vehicle.

Severe weather poses a threat to everyone on the roads

It's important for anyone driving in severe weather to know the conditions and what they're comfortable driving in. When winds pick up and tornadoes are possible, for example, it is normally best for drivers to pull over or to wait out the storm before heading out for the day or night. That kind of caution can help prevent rear-end crashes, head-on collisions and other incidents as a result of the poor weather conditions.

If you are struck by someone who violates a traffic law during a storm, they can still be held liable for their actions. You deserve to be treated fairly, and as a victim, you may be able to seek compensation.
