How do broken bones affect you?

When you got into a wreck, you knew immediately that you were badly hurt. After being rushed to the hospital, it turned out that you broke several bones and needed surgery to correct the breaks.

On the whole, bone fractures are not dangerous or life-changing. However, there are times when they can have a profound impact on your life and lead to chronic pain or other complications.

In the case of a minor break, you may be looking at only a few weeks of recovery and a low level of pain. However, a more serious break or a shattered bone is different. You may need to have surgery, pins and other medical interventions to hold the bones in place as they heal. There is a potential for widespread and/or chronic pain if the bones do not heal correctly.

Fractures can be complete or partial. A complete break is going to be more significant than a partial one, and there is a greater risk that it will not heal correctly. In some rare cases, complete fractures could impact organs or arteries -- threatening a person's life.

If you have a broken bone, get medical help. If you are involved in a traffic accident and believe you've broken ond of more bones, it's important to go to the hospital and have an exam, X-ray or other tests to find out what's happened. If you do have a break, you should undergo treatment immediately so that you can start the healing process. If another driver was responsible for the accident, you should find out what your options are for seeking compensation for your expenses and damages.
